The six dimensions of national culture are based on extensive research done by Professor Geert Hofstede, Gert Jan Hofstede, Michael Minkov and their research teams.

A framework offered by Hofstede offers one such approach for understanding how values differences across national cultures can influence human behavior at work. The values that distinguished countries from each other could be grouped statistically into four clusters. These four groups became the Hofstede dimensions of national culture: Hofstedes cultural dimensions theory is a framework for cross-cultural communication, developed by Geert Hofstede.
